In the early morning of September 9, 2023, George Americo Soltero passed away peacefully in his sleep; he was 88 years old. George was born in June of 1935 to Carolina Soltero. Born in Globe, Arizona, George lived most of his life in Tucson, he was a proud Tucson High Badger. After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, George rose up in the ranks of the U.S. Post Office serving as manager at several branches until his retirement in 1990. George was retired for five days when he became a Bailiff at the Pima County Superior Courts and served several Judges for over 20 years. A fierce competitor, George was an avid softball player often coaching or managing the teams he organized. His teammates affectionately dubbed him “Big Bird” as he looked like a big bird with feathers flying everywhere when he ran down the baseline. George really enjoyed traveling to many places including Hawaii, England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and Morocco. Mexico City was particularly memorable as, for a terrifying, frantic time, he lost his older sister traveling with the group. Nothing put a bigger smile on George’s face than having visits from his children and grandchildren. George is preceded in death by his mother, 5 brothers, one sister and one grandson. He is survived by his wife, two sisters, one brother, two daughters and two sons, many grandchildren and many, many great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on September 23, at Book of Life Church (formerly known as Palo Verde Baptist Church), 2151 N. Palo Verde, Tucson Az. 85716. Viewing and Condolences can be made from 9-10 am., with a Memorial Service at 10 am. Burial at East Lawn Cemetery will follow after the service.
