Helen Marguerite Wilson was born in Glendale, AZ on November 21, 1920, the only child of Herman and Ada Schahrer. She graduated from Glendale Union High School in 1938, serving as editor of its yearbook as a senior. Her lifelong love of college sports began on the women’s softball team at the University of Arizona. She graduated from the U of A in 1942 with a degree in nutrition and was accepted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO for a dietetics internship. There she met her husband of 72 years, Dr. John Wilson.
In 1953 Helen and John moved to Tucson where they raised their three children and later were actively involved in the daily lives of their four grandchildren. Time with family was Helen’s priority, but she also loved to travel and often combined the two.
During these busy years, Helen also found time to volunteer her services to the Tucson community. She was very proud of her 54 years dedicated to the Tucson Medical Center Auxiliary where she worked primarily in the surgery lobby. Other volunteer endeavors included the Tucson Children’s Home, The Assistance League of Tucson and Mobile Meals. Over a 40 year span, she served as President of several of these organizations.
Helen passed away peacefully on July 14th surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her husband John. She is survived by daughter Peggy Sims (Jim), son John, son Jim (Lauren) and their four children Michelle May (Ben), Bryan, Ashley and Kyle.
A service honoring Helen’s life will be held on Saturday, July 29th at 3:00 PM at East Lawn Mortuary on Grant Road in Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to: John A.
