Jim was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. He played football, basketball, and ran track.
After graduating from High School, Jim enlisted in the US Air Force and served in South East Asia during the Vietnam War and continued to serve over 20 years, retiring in Tucson as a Tech Sergeant after helping to get the Green Valley Missile Museum and Pima Air Wing off the ground. During his service he was awarded The Meritorious Service Medal.
Over the 40 years Jim was a Boy Scout, he served in many capacities involving, among other things, forming over 40 new units. Jim’s three sons and stepson were all very active in Boy Scouting and became Eagle Scouts. His awards include Philmont Master’s Track Award, District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, and Vigil Honor.
Jim Nelson passed away at the age of 76 and is survived by his wife, Jean, who is also a Scouter, his sons, James, John, Jeremy, stepson, Bryan, and 8 grandchildren.
Services will be held at Capilla Del Sol Christian Church, 3130 W. Overton Rd., Tucson, AZ 85742 on Sunday, July 21 at 12:30 p.m. Donation may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Catalina Council, Sky Islands District, Tucson.
