
April 17, 1925 – March 16, 2023 – James Dwight “Jim” Palmer (97) was born at home on the family farm in Osbourne County, Kansas on April 17, 1925, and passed away peacefully on March 16, 2023, in Tucson, Arizona.
His early years were spent on the farm, until the family moved to Lucas, KS. He was captain of the football team at Lucas High School in 1944. Later Jim graduated Hutchinson Junior College and Emporia State Teachers College. Jim married Rajean Shull of Hutchinson, KS in 1952. They were married 67 years, until her death in 2020. Together they had four children, Timothy 1955, Christopher 1956, Jennifer 1959, and Jeffrey 1969.
Jim’s teaching career began at Park elementary in Lyons, KS in 1954. Jim moved his family to Tucson in 1959. He taught at Sam Hughes elementary for 9 years, Magee Jr. High School for 11 years, and Santa Rita H.S. (as guidance counselor) for 15 years until he retired in 1986.
A lifelong Christian, Jim and Rajean were active in church life. They enjoyed teaching Bible study, Sunday School, and hosting many of these events at their home. Both also served in The Stephen Ministries for many years. Jim served faithfully at church and was a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and at Devon Gables. Jim loved to travel and always researched the destination by reading many books ahead of his trips.
He is survived by sons Tim (Pam), Jeff (Beth), daughter Jennifer (Wayne); granddaughters Jessica (Dan), Amanda (Michael), and Katie; grandsons Aaron (Katharina), Andrew, Daniel, and Matthew; great-grandson Noah. He was preceded in death by wife Rajean (2020), and son Christopher (2011). A private family graveside service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Gospel Rescue Mission, Tucson.
