

Jane Ann Parson Matthews passed away May 29, 2026, at Tucson Place in Tucson. She was 93, born in Denver, Colorado, on October 27, 1932, to Ruth Buchanan Parson, and Elmer Sharswood Parson, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ray Matthews of Raleigh, North Carolina, her brother Elmer S. Parson, Jr., and her sister, Susan Elizabeth Parson Stewart.
Jane is survived by her son, Charles Robert Matthews, his wife Linda, and their son Brian; daughter Deborah Susan Matthews of Boise, Idaho; and son Richard Parson Matthews, of San Francisco, California, and his son Neil who attends Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Jane graduated from South High School in Denver, Colorado, in 1950. She attended University of Colorado in Boulder for two years, then pursued becoming a stewardess for United Airlines. Her main routes with United included Seattle and Denver. Although she loved her career, she met Robert Matthews through her brother Elmer. They were married October 15, 1955.
Her husband Bob’s career as a civil (construction) engineer involved several moves around the country, including Tucson for a short time in 1958. At the end of Bob’s career, they retired in Merced, California, and in 2018, they moved to Tucson, Arizona, to be near their son Chuck and wife Linda.
Over the years, Jane was active in raising her kids, involved in church, community activities, quilting, and as a election poll worker. She loved visiting her grandsons Brian and Neil.
Jane was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and very supportive of American Legion Girls State and Girls Nation. In 1949, she attended Colorado Girls State and Girls Nation, participating in model government. Later in her life, she participated in selling poppies as a remembrance of Memorial Day for veterans, sponsored by the American Legion.
Just a few days before she passed, her son Chuck took a poppy to her, and she clutched it to her heart and smiled.
Jane enjoyed sewing, knitting, and needlepoint. Around 1979, she started quilting, and over the years, she made many quilts for family and friends. She enjoyed participating in local quilting guilds and participated in several quilt shows. She passed her love of quilting to her daughter Debbie.
She and Bob were active participants in the United Methodist Church. After moving to Tucson, they attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Tucson.
