Jere Kay Steen was born on November 3, 1936 in Rayville, LA to L.T. and Mamye Steen. She grew up in Lake Charles, LA where her father was in the grocery business. The family moved to Tucson in 1951 where she began her freshman year. She met her future husband, David Butler, at First Southern Baptist Church soon after moving to Tucson. She graduated from Tucson High School in 1955. Jere and David were married on November 22, 1955, and would have celebrated their 68th anniversary this year. They were blessed with four daughters, and she was Noni to 13 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. She inspired many people with her beautiful soprano voice and wonderful Bible teaching. She was an exemplary sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family and her church were the center of her life. From tea parties for the grandchildren, to dinners for family and friends to hosting many youth and Sunday school activities, Jere did it all with excellence and grace. The home she created and maintained was a special place of love and joy to all who entered there. After a long illness, Jere passed away at home on August 18, 2023, leaving an enduring legacy. She loved well and was well-loved!
