Centenarian
Laura Louise Blunt was born March 1, 1913 in Plymouth, NC to Ella Blunt. Laura had three sisters and four brothers.
At the age of 17 years old, Laura moved to Mount Vernon, New York with her daughter, Bertha. She married Aaron Davis. Laura made a living by working for wealthy families in Bronxville, NY.
During the late 1940s to early 1950s, Laura and Aaron were divorced. She left New York and went to California where she was offered a job caring for children and handling the affairs of families who required her gifts and skills in Woodland Hills and Santa Barbara. She remained in California for almost 12 years.
In 1956, she joined Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She was involved with the Missionary Society and in 2006; the Women's Ministry presented Sister Laura with the "Woman of the Year 2006 Certificate" under the Leadership of Pastor Ricky B. Harvey.
For many years, Laura catered parties, and big fancy dinners for the top echelon in Tucson at that time. In 1959, she was introduced to Albert Thompson, Jr., a member of the United States Air Force. Albert and Laura were married and Laura became the mother of Albert's 5 children from a previous marriage.
In 1976, Laura and Albert adopted Belva Mary Thompson, Albert Thompson's grand-daughter. Laura retired from work in 1978. She continued to work in the community with the church and with other organizations. Laura and Albert were married until Albert Jr.'s death in 1983. Sister Laura remained in the same home on 22nd Street until her death.
Laura was preserved by her faith in God. She believed in helping people; she was a free spirit and did what she wanted, but God was the head of her life. She enjoyed being involved in the community and her church. She was active with the Missionary Society and served as an Usher at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. When Laura reached 100 years old, she was honored as part of the Salute to Centenarians sponsored by the Pima Council on Aging. She attended the celebration every year through 2017.
Laura was quite the traveler, North Carolina, New York, California and then to Arizona. She has been all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. Despite not having a college degree, she was trained by doctors, lawyers and businessmen. She was well learned and traveled.
She spent her final days resting in her room as she had done so many times. On June 27, 2020, at the age of 107, with her daughter Belva by her side, Sister Laura Louise Thompson transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her daughter, Belva, five grandchildren, Ten great grandchildren and Ten great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives, family and friends.
