Martha Carillo Hunnicutt, a beloved wife and mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, step-mother, and friend, passed away on July 3rd, 2023 at the age of 67. Martha's warm presence and radiant personality will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Martha was born in September 1955 to Pablo Carillo and Maria N. Pasillas. Martha has one brother who survives her, Paul Carillo.
Martha was the loving wife of her beloved Charles A. Hunnicutt, and together they shared over 40 years of marriage, built a foundation of profound love, respect, and mutual support. Their union was a shining example of devotion and partnership, and their love served as a guiding light for their family.
Martha was a devoted mother and found immense joy in her role as a parent. She leaves behind her children Myra (Francisco) Gonzalez, Marchello (Karla) Smith, Gabriel (Rachel) Hunnicutt, and step-daughter Tasheena, who will all forever cherish her love and guidance; Martha rejoins her son Darrell J. Smith, who preceded her in passing, in watching over their family, alongside her mother Maria (Nana, Chuni) and grand-daughter Christina. Martha's nurturing spirit and unwavering support shaped the lives of her children, instilling them values of compassion, resilience, and kindness.
As a grandmother to Nicole, Rafael, Christina (preceded Martha in passing), Nashlee, Cesar, David, Derek, Devonte, Mia, Gabriel Jr., Malachi, Luke, Summer, Allanna and Alexis, Martha experienced the purest form of joy and love. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in their laughter, accomplishments, and unique personalities. Martha's love extended even further as she became a great-grandmother to ten wonderful great-grandchildren, adding new layers of joy and fulfillment to her life. She loved to play with them, sparking their imagination and playfulness.
Martha had a passion for gardening and loved to sit in wonder of all the birds and pollinators that the garden attracted. She is fondly remembered for her passionate care of the oasis which extended to every corner of her home.
Volunteer work was another avenue through which Martha expressed her boundless compassion. She selflessly dedicated her time and energy to St. Mary's Hospice, where she would sit with patients who were alone becuase she felt strongly that no one should be alone in the end. She also volunteered at Turn Your Life Around, a woman's shelter for survivors of abuse, domestic violence, and drug rehabilitation. She further volunteer with the Pima county Sheriff's Auxiliary following her retirement.
Martha's infectious charisma made her a beacon of light in any room she entered. She possessed an innate ability to connect with people on a deep level, effortlessly forming friendships that lasted a lifetime. Her magnetic personality drew others to her, and she made everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. Martha's ability to find joy in the simplest things and her zest for life left and indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Anywhere she ventured, she would spark friendships and love.
Among the vibrant hues of the rainbow, Martha's favorite color was teal blue. It symbolized her unwavering spirit, resilience, and profound capacity for love. Just as teal blue is a blend of serenity and strength, Martha embodied these qualities throughout her life, becoming an inspiration to all who crossed her path. Martha never wanted her passing to be a sorrowful endeavor. She said it should be a celebration and one of her last requests was that people wear colorful dress on her final memorial.
Martha Carillo Hunnicutt's legacy will live on through the memories she created, the lives she touched, and the love she shared with all those fortunate enough to have known her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered and celebrated for her unwavering love, nurturing spirit, and her ability to bring joy to those around her.
