Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to Matthew, who left us on 8/28/26 at the age of 54. He was a man of complex and difficult truths—possessing a warmth, strength and loving personality that showed who he was at his core, alongside a deep mental illness that shaped much of his life.
Matthew’s life was defined by severe mental illness and a relentless battle with his own internal struggles. The realities of his illness were heavy and many times painful for him and those around him. His illness led to harmful actions with severe consequences.
In a beautiful grace, the last couple of years and especially the last six months brought better days. It was a true blessing to see Matthew soften, becoming more loving, caring, and at peace. This final chapter allowed his family and those around him to experience a gentle side of him that brought genuine happiness creating precious, healing memories to hold on to.
Matthew’s family wishes to express deep gratitude to the many professionals who cared for him throughout his life. To the doctors, nurses, counselors, caregivers, first responders, and legal professionals who navigated his darkest moments with patience and humanity: thank you. Your willingness to treat him with dignity and see the human being behind the illness truly mattered.
He was a son, a brother, an uncle, a nephew, a cousin, and a friend. His life was complicated, his path was fraught, but he mattered. He is finally at peace, and he will never be forgotten.
Matthew, we love you. We always have, and we always will.
