

Maureen Hannley, PhD, born November 1, 1942, passed away unexpectedly on August 3, 2015. Maureen is survived by her loving mother Agnes; son Michael Schumacher (Laney); daughter Stephanie Stevenson (Sean), grandchildren Autumn Rhodes, Nathan Rhodes, Ella Stevenson, brother Michael (Ruth); sister Beth (Greg Bogaard); sister Patsy Sable (Ron); brother Jim(Pam Powers); brother Greg,(Andrea) brother Rob (Kristine) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Vincent P. Hannley, and sister Heather Minder (Mark). Maureen earned a PhD in Auditory Sciences & Biocommunication from Baylor College of Medicine, as well as a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona. An extraordinary teacher, she held faculty appointments at Arizona State University, Stanford University College of Medicine, Duke University College of Medicine and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Most recently, she was appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor in Otolaryngology at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine. As Chief Research Officer of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, she initiated and expanded the research programs of the Academy. Dr. Hannley has received awards from the American Otological Society, the American Head and Neck Society, the Triological Society, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery for significant contributions to research and for advancing research training in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. Formerly Health Services Administrator and Director of the Hearing Research Program at the NIH National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, Dr Hannley is the author of two books, 10 chapters in books, and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles. She was sought after as a keynote speaker delighting audiences around the world. A lifelong learner, she was studying to become a docent at the Reid Park Zoo. Her family knows her as a loving daughter and sister, an incredible wit, terrific cook and fabulous storyteller. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, August 9th at 1:30 pm at East Lawn Palms, 5801 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ.
