Maxine Genevieve Wersto, age 91, of Tucson, Arizona passed peacefully on March 13, 2016. Maxine was born December 2, 1924 to Max and Mary (Wegenke) Miller in Chicago, Illinois.

Maxine graduated from Immaculata High School in 1942. Upon graduation, she received the Bausch & Lomb Science Award. In her words, “Science is like Cracker Jacks, the more you get, the more you want. I never tire of it!””

Her working career included employment with Bowman Dairy as a laboratory technician in Chicago, IL and with the Illinois School District #207 as an Accounts Payable Supervisor.

She married Anthony Wersto in 1964 where they lived in Des Plaines, IL until her retirement in 1986. The couple then moved to Sun City, AZ to enjoy retirement. She was widowed in 1993. In 2012, she moved to “The Fountains” in Tucson, AZ to be closer to family.

Maxine enjoyed crocheting/knitting, playing cards and traveling. She will be most remembered for her kind spirit of giving to others. While in Sun City, AZ, she volunteered countless hours of her time working with the Women’s Guild at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church. After moving to “The Fountains” she kept busy with three special projects; knitting sweaters for needy children in the Tucson area, crocheting red, white and blue scarves for veterans in Hospice and crocheting sleeping mats for the homeless from recycled plastic bags.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Anthony and brother, Thomas. She is survived by her sister-in-law Marjorie Miller, of Tucson, AZ, nieces, Patty Tuegel of Rockville, MD, Marcia Blake of Phx, AZ, Paula Noel, Michelle Perrin, Roberta Braegelmann and Janene Putnam all of Tucson, AZ and two nephews Robert Wersto of Olney, MD and Thomas Wersto of Arlington, VA, along with many great nieces and great nephews.
