Nina was born on March 2, 1937, in Rochester, New York, to Julienne Sakowitz Meyers and Walter de Lima Meyers. She was preceded in death by her parents. Nina is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Morton Lee Susman, and her beloved son Mark Lee Susman, who is married to Melissa. She cherished her role as grandmother to Julienne Susman Murchison (Robert F. Jr.) of Dallas, Texas, and Maxwell Lee Susman (Madeline) of Menlo Park, California. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Robert Frank Murchison III, Otto Charles Susman, Olivia Julienne Susman, and Christina Clara Murchison.
Nina's life journey began in Rochester, but soon after her birth, her family relocated to Houston, Texas, where she spent her formative years on Hedwig Rd. Fond memories of her summers were spent at Cimarroncita Girls Camp near Cimarron, NM. Subsequently, the family moved to Dallas in 1946, and Nina attended boarding school at The Cambridge School of Weston in Weston, MA.
It was just before her 21st birthday that Nina met the love of her life, Mort Susman, on a blind date in Dallas. They married in 1958, shortly after Mort graduated from law school and before he reported to Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. Following Mort's graduation from OCS, they settled in Pensacola, Florida, where their son Mark was born. In 1961, they returned to Texas, making Houston their home.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Nina traveled extensively with Mort and Mark to their vacation property in Grand Cayman, supporting father/son shared passion for scuba diving. Later in life, Nina and Mort retired to Tucson, Arizona, residing in the serene foothills at Canyon Ranch, embracing a quieter pace away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Wherever they went, Nina and Mort cultivated lifelong friendships and cherished memories.
Following in her mother Julienne's footsteps, Nina was a passionate advocate for women's health issues and dedicated her time and energy in leadership roles and fundraising to those causes she believed in.
Nina had a zest for life, enjoying travel, fine dining, and supporting the arts and artists she admired. She had a gift for bringing people together, always ready to introduce people to one another if she knew it would help them along life's journey. As a mother, she was extraordinary, deeply devoted to her family and ensuring that everything was done with care and love.
A private memorial service, officiated by Rabbi Metz of Congregational Anshei Israel, was held on Friday, February 2nd, at the East Lawn Palms Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona. A Celebration of Life will be arranged in both Tucson and Houston at later dates this spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in honor of Nina's memory.
