On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, Khwaja Sat Nam Nur Ali Tenzin Philip Calvin Boatright woke up at 5:00 a.m., had some ice cream and ice chips, and announced that he would be leaving that day. At 2:57 p.m., he did just that, leaving this existence surrounded by his close family and a multitude of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This was a graceful exit for a spiritually mindful practitioner.
Philip Boatright, born June 26, 1934 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was a poet, minister, book seller, massage therapist, Kundalini yoga instructor, psychiatric technician, home care nurse, world traveler, and the embodiment of the Spirit of Christmas. He never met a stranger and was at home in the world.
In his search for truth, equanimity, and service, Philip explored a variety of spiritual paths, culminating in a peaceful, conscious departure. Philip is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette, his sons, Daniel and Stephen, niece and nephews Susan, Mark, Jim, Kevin, and Roger, and countless friends, students, and acquaintances.
Bernadette would like to thank Philip’s medical care team, especially Stacey Bezel, R.N; Drs. Leila Ali Akbarian, Sairam Parthasarathy, Gundeep Singh, and Paul Walshaw; Kristin, Simone, and Tara, the Home Health team; Luis F. Lopez, of Desert Rose Heather Mortuary and his incredibly sensitive and caring transporters; her family, Jim and Stacy and Kathleen and Raymond, for their unconditional love and support; and Soulistic Hospice. Additionally, a heartfelt “thank you” to Randy and Karen Garland and the Garland family, who loved Philip deeply and could not have been more supportive.
Memorial services are planned for the Springtime at a location and date to be announced.
