Richard was born in a little white house in Makoti, N.D. , the 3rd of 10 children. "Dickie" graduated from high school in 1950, and then enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Sergeant as an Intelligence Analyst. After being stationed in California, he was transferred to Hawaii and then Japan, serving during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged in 1953, he attended college studying to be a teacher. In 1959 he met his wife Phyllis, and after one date they knew they would always be together. They were married in Minot, ND on July 2nd, 1959. Their marriage lasted 64 wonderful years. They had 2 children, Greg and Terri. After living in Fargo for awhile and owning his own appliance store, in 1961 they moved the family to Aurora, Ill where Dick worked for Montgomery Ward. In 1971, the family moved to Tucson, AZ, where they resided until his passing. Dick retired in 1991, and he and Phyllis traveled the country and spent summers in Makoti. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was always there to help anyone in need. He will be so very missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Dick is survived by his wife Phyllis, his daughter, Terri, his grandchildren David, Kim, and Justin, as well as his great grandchildren Anthony, Isabella, Liliana, Liam, and Connor, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He is preceded in death by his son Greg, granddaughters Ann and Sheridan, by his parents, Jacob and Alice Petz, brother Duane, and sisters Joyce and Peggy. We know they have now all been happily reunited.
