Sam received advanced degrees from the University of Arizona. In his remarkable 40 plus years teaching; Patagonia, Amphitheater and Catalina Foothills High Schools, he entertained and enlightened thousands of students. His dynamic AP US History and AP European History lectures were filled with anecdotes and penetrating questions drawn from a deep understanding of his subject. Students clamored to join his classes eagerly looking forward to their junior year when they could finally land a coveted seat before Mr. Caruso. Students earned, not just college credit, but a life- long respect and yearning for learning. More than anything, students wanted to be like him— warm, funny, smart, and cool.
To friends and family, Sam was a gentle, kind soul. He loved opera, art museums, monuments, hiking, and sports. He organized and escorted students on dozens of summer European excursions where he could continue his teaching in a more intimate, meaningful setting, opening young minds to not just history, but a way to know and to strive for knowledge, and to think deeply about important questions. Mr. Caruso, rare and wonderful, will be sorely missed for his great mind, a loving heart and his passionate commitment to the profession of teaching.
Sam Caruso is survived by his daughters Anna M. Lucas (Jason), expecting his second grandchild, Robyn M Caruso (Hector), grandson Bruno Caruso Aguirre, sister Angie Wall, extended family and friends. Arrangements by East Lawn Palms Mortuary & Cemetery.
