Shirley Ann Johnson

Shirley Ann Johnson, age 86, of Tucson, Arizona, peacefully went home to the loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, August 12, 2023. She is preceded in death by her father Carl Grover Johnson, her mother, Caroline Kollross Johnson, sister Ruth Johnson Hockensmith, niece Caroline Hockensmith, and brother Robert C. Johnson. She served in religious life for 18 years as Sister Mary Carleen of Holy Cross Sisters, South Bend, Indiana.

Shirley was a devoted elementary educator, and her Tucson career included Pima County Public Schools, Santa Cruz Church School, San Xavier Mission School, and Southern Christian School. She also tutored elementary students for the Title I Reading Program and the NAU Foster Grandparenting Program.

She is survived by nephews Russell Johnson (Kathleen), Ross Johnson, niece Deborah Johnson Little (Doyle), Shirley Marie Hockensmith Graves (Stephen), and numerous great-nephews and nieces.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mass in Shirley’s memory at Holy Hope Cemetery & Mausoleum, at 10 a.m. on October 5, 2023, with Bishop Emeritus Gerald Kicanas presiding. Shirley’s ashes will be interred in the crypt at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, California.
