Sonia Margot Jaimez

Our hearts are saddened as we will miss our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Godmother, Comadre/friend, Cantora.

Sonia Margot Jaimez of Tucson, Arizona, died on January 5, 2024; born on October 23, 1969 to Tony Mendibles Jaimez and Margaret Lizarraga Jaimez. Sonia is a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and is a descendant of the Tohono O’Odham Nation. Known to be fearless and a fighter, Sonia was recently diagnosed with lupus nephritis, which ultimately took her life.

Sonia is survived by her children, Steven Alvarez (Clarissa Valencia), Stephanie Alvarez, Samuel Alvarez (Serina Hubbard); father, Tony Jaimez; Valerio Valencia (beloved partner); brother, Antonio Jaimez (Elisa), Sister, Alva Obregon (Daniel), and 8 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Jaimez, brother Jesus R. Jaimez and grandparents, Margaret & Luis Buitimea, and Esmeralda & Ramon Jayme.

Sonia attended Tucson Magnet High School. She continued her education at Lamson Business College and received an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Studies. Prior to dedicating 31 years to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Education, Tribal Gaming Office, and Finance Departments, Sonia worked at various schools. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also loved to watch baseball and football.

Sonia was a dedicated cultural participant (cantora/church & altar society) in the Yoem Barrio Libre Community - Capilla de Señor de los Milagros. She also served as the secretary on the Yoem Barrio Libre Community Council for five years.

Gone far too soon, the memory of Sonia will always be in our hearts. Sonia’s family ask that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, and not for the sadness of her passing. The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and words of sympathy that will always be remembered.

An all-night vigil will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Capilla de Señor de los Milagros, 3410 S. 16th Ave, Tucson, AZ 85713.

Rosary will begin at 6:00 pm

Mass will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 7:00 am

Burial will be following mass at Monte Calvario Cemetery, 5149 W. Omokol, Tucson, AZ 85757.
