November 19, 1953-June 10, 2012
Steve was strong and brave.
While tubing down the Guadalupe River in Texas, Steve noticed what nobody else did- a young boy whose head was inches below the water because his leg was wedged underneath some rebar. He quickly organized a human chain to battle against the current of a waterfall. They got some rope and by a miracle Steve placed a lasso around the arm of the boy and the men pulled him to safety.
Steve was smart and helpful.
In Malaysia he once mentored seven junior engineers/geologists at once, teaching them the ropes he learned over his eventual 35 year long career working for one company, Schlumberger, in an industry notorious for frequent turnovers in personnel.
Steve loved his family.
Nothing tugged at his heartstrings like his seven grandchildren-Macy, Bryden, Taylor, Gabriel, Rachel, Lucy, and Calla. He loved his children Echo Hansen, Monica McTeague and Ryan Hansen, and he loved their spouses, Rob, Mike and Pam. He also loved his wife, Cindy. Steve loved his huge Hansen clan, starting with his dad J. W. Hansen and seven siblings- Bill, Carol, Diane, Pam, Rick, Laura, and David. He loved his stepmothers Phyllis Hansen, and Wilma Hansen along with her daughters Joanie and Sandy. And now he is reunited with the mother he lost to cancer in childhood, Florence Hansen.
Steve loved his friends.
And they loved him back. Literally thousands of friends from around the world followed his blog- Steven “Superman” Hansen, Making Thyroid Cancer History.
Steve was generous.
He contributed to Childfund, (once called Christian Children’s Fund) each month throughout the thirty eight years he was married, even during the lean times when he worked his way through college as a waiter.
If you wish to make a donation in his name, please consider Childfund, or Imagine No Malaria, a campaign of the United Methodist Church to eradicate malaria, a disease all three of Steve’s children contracted while living in Indonesia.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Catalina United Methodist Church, in Tucson, AZ.
