Born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, in 1946, Sue was the daughter of Harold S. Vanderhei and Irma A. (Rokus) Vanderhei. She was blessed with an older brother, David, and a younger sister, Sharon. Sue graduated from Roaring Spring High School in Pennsylvania and continued her education at Gettysburg College, earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1967.
Following graduation, Sue began her remarkable 33-year career at IBM as a student programmer. Over the years, she took on increasingly challenging roles, managing multiple product lines and manufacturing sites worldwide. Her dedication and leadership culminated in her position as a Principal and Executive Consultant before her retirement in 2001. It was through her work that she met her beloved husband, Carl, who became her greatest supporter and partner in life.
Sue was known for her warmth, infectious personality, and a smile that could light up any room. She loved meeting new people and making each person feel special. Her friends held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every friendship she formed over the years. A devoted sports fan, Sue loved the Green Bay Packers and was a University of Arizona basketball season ticket holder for over 40 years.
She is survived by her brother, David Vanderhei (and partner Cheryl Whited), sister, Sharon Moran, and a wide circle of treasured family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Carl Raymond Harwood. Carl left behind his two daughters, one son (who preceded him in death), 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers or a formal service, the family invites you to honor Sue’s memory in a way that is meaningful to you—whether that’s enjoying a cup of coffee, sharing a meal with loved ones, reminiscing about good times, or attending a sporting event.
Sue will be laid to rest alongside Carl at East Lawn Palms Mortuary and Cemetery, 5801 E Grant Rd, Tucson, AZ.
