

Alma Mitchell, Read, Coate, Wilson, 103, died Sept. 6. Born April 11, 1909 to Josie and Joe Mitchell at the Emerald Ranch in Sunnyside, WA. Alma was a bright, cooperative student and piano player. She was accepted into Central Washington and graduated with a teacher’s degree in 1930. Alma loved to teach children to read and her motto was, “250 sight words and phonics”. She and Chet Read, the Sunnyside Elementary School principal, enjoyed their children; Roger, Carole and Stuart. The family moved to Seattle in 1944 where they both were educators in the Highline School District.
In 1967, after the children left the nest, Alma married Gilbert Coate, the love of her life for 22 years. They retired in Panorama City to enjoy fishing in Long Lake and potluck dinners with neighbors. Upon his death, Alma resettled into The Firs Retirement, and married Lee Wilson.
In 2007, Alma moved into her daughter’s home in Indian Summer where she celebrated her 100th. For the past two years, Lilyran Home Care has provided a safe haven.

Alma leaves 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many teacher associates and friends.
