

He joined the Army at the age of 17 and was stationed in Germany where he met his Wife to be, Ortrud (Trudy) Irmgard Prostler. They were married in 1962 and after 20 years in the military and stationed in a variety of locations, they eventually settled in the Olympia area in 1978.
During his 20 year military career, he received the following decorations, as well as numerous awards, citation, letters of commendation and appreciation: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Korea Defense Service Medal Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Aircraft Crewmembers Badge.
While stationed in California, Gene attended night school at the Monterey Peninsula College and obtained an Associate Degree in Business Administration. After settling in Olympia and working for the State Department of Licensing, he went back to school at the St Martin’s University and obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Admin.
After 25 years with the Department of Licensing as a Liaison Officer and Computer Analyst/Programmer, Gene retired in 2005.
His retirement years were joyful ones and he especially enjoyed working in his yard and on old cars with his street rod buddies. His 1956 Ford F100 pickup was his pride and joy. He also enjoyed working on Genealogy and compiled many years of family history.
Gene was a kind and loving person although, believed in the “no Slack” concept. He believed that everyone would progress in life as far and as much as they put into it “no pain, no gain”. He was a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Brenda Barker of Olympia and Sylvia Fadhl of Dixon, CA, grandchildren Noah and Kory Barker, and great grandson Spencer Thomas Barker.
