Doug was born on March 6, 1950, to Fran and Ken Richmond in Twin Falls, Idaho. He then moved to Oregon where he completed High School and met the love of his life, Wanda, who on July 25, 1967, became his devoted and loving wife of 59 years.
Doug joined the Army in 1967, and he and Wanda started the journey of their life together. He lived a life defined by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family. He proudly served in the military for 29 years, a career that took him across the country and around the world. In the United States he was stationed in Washington, Florida and Texas, and he had several locations abroad which included Germany, Greece, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and his final overseas assignment was Cairo, Egypt. He retired from the Army while being in Egypt and started his Government Career while stationed here and he continued his work serving his country as an aerospace engineer, working with missile systems (Hawk), something he absolutely loved and took immense pride in.
Doug was a man of many talents and simple joys, but his family was always his greatest accomplishment. He had a gift for turning any yard into something beautiful, taking pride in keeping one of the most well-kept homes and yards around. His garage was one of the most organized rooms of the “house.” He loved cutting trees, going to auctions with Wanda, and always having a project to work on. And then there was card night, where family and friends all sat around the table for some fun and competition. Or as some would call it “Dinner and a show.” Always entertaining on card night at the Richmond’s.
He was known for his frugality, his unmatched organization, but more than anything, Doug was known for his heart. He was charming, charismatic, never met a stranger and endlessly giving to anyone in need. His neighbors became friends; he was loved by all he met. He was silly, quick to laugh, and always happy—except, as his family jokes, when it came time to balance the checkbook. That is when they would all disappear. He was the kind of man who would drop everything to help someone, and he made sure the people he loved knew just how proud he was of them.
Doug was also known for his striking good looks and his famously beautiful hair, but to those who knew him best, he was something even more meaningful, he was home. He was the glue that held his family together, a steady, loving presence who brought comfort, laughter, and strength to everyone around him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda Richmond; his mother, Fran Wiley, his children, Debbie Crocker, Tammy Benefield (Alan), and Douglas Richmond (Laura); and his cherished grandchildren, Kira McIntyre (Cody), Dallas Currier, Tyler Currier, Max Parker, Austin Richmond, Kaitlynn Richmond, AJ Ballew, and Eliza Ballew. He also leaves behind his beloved great-grandchildren, Jackson, Ella, Wyatt, Westin, Denver, Benjamin, Maverick, Atlas, and Ryan James. His siblings, Pam White (Joe), Mickey Crump (John), and Travis Langley (Mary Lou). Doug had 9 nieces, and 4 nephews.
Doug is reunited in peace with those who went before him, his father Kenneth Carl Richmond, his sister Carla Mangus, his granddaughter Kirstin Richmond, and great-grandchildren Karson and Kaylee Richmond, Arthur Richmond, two of his sons-in-law Mark Parker and Dusty Crocker.
In keeping with Doug’s wishes, no formal funeral or services will be held. He did not want any more grief than necessary, again thinking of his family first. He asked that we honor him privately and carry forward the love and laughter that he gave so freely! To remember all the good times and celebrate the life we all cherished with him.
Doug’s legacy lives on in the family he adored, the lessons he taught, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
