Harold Maurice Juhlin

Harold Maurice “Morey” Juhlin, 90, passed away August 13, 2026. He was born March 9, 1936, to Harold Arlie Juhlin and Jeanette Lillian Blatchford Juhlin and grew up on a farm near Maskell, Nebraska.

Morey attended Maskell High School and began farming after graduation. A severe drought ended his farming career after a year, and he went to work helping build the new library at Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska. It was there that he met his future wife, Shirley M. Meyer. The following year, they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where they married and began their life together.

Morey began his working career at a meat-packing plant, starting by cleaning floors and eventually becoming a supervisor. He later worked for the USDA as a beef grader and market news reporter, covering beef markets. He also proudly served six years in the Iowa Army Reserves from 1958 to 1964, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Morey loved his family and was especially proud of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed telling others about their accomplishments and cherished the many summers spent with Shirley, their children, and friends at area lakes water skiing and camping.

He was a talented woodworker who built furniture and created intricately designed wooden bowls and pens. He operated a knife-sharpening business well into his 80s and enjoyed working on cars, remodeling homes, fishing, camping, baseball, water skiing and following the San Francisco 49ers.

Morey’s faith was an important part of his life. He was active in the Lutheran church throughout the years, serving as church elder and president, stewardship committee chair, and church property board member. He and Shirley were initial members of Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa, and later attended Mt. Calvary Lutheran in Huron, South Dakota, Redeemer Lutheran in Sioux City and St. Paul’s Lutheran in Ankeny, Iowa. After moving to Washington State, they joined Faith Lutheran Church in Lacey. In 2024, they moved to Lacey, Washington, to be closer to their daughter and her husband.

Morey will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generosity, ingenuity, faith and devotion to his family. He leaves behind many cherished memories and the lasting example of a life well lived.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Meyer Juhlin; daughter Nancy Juhlin; son Randall Juhlin; and five grandchildren, Matthew, Meghan, Jonathan, R. Thor, and Caroline (Lena); and sister Barbara Juhlin Anfison.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Juhlin; parents, Harold and Jeanette Juhlin; brother, George Arlie Juhlin; and grandparents.
