Harry Bud Deane Hartwell

Harry Deane ("Bud") Hartwell, 89, died at Providence St. Peter's Hospital, Sunday, January 29, 2012, following a stroke. He was born in Springfield, MA, on August 16, 1922, to Earle D. Hartwell and Alice Gould Mitchell of West Springfield, MA. Harry graduated from West Springfield High School, class of 1940, in West Springfield, MA and then served in the U.S. Army 392nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, stationed in Hawaii from 1942 to 1946. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1950 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and received his Masters in Zoology and Wildlife Management from Oregon State University in 1956. During his studies he researched pheasants on Eliza Island and the "Nelchina" herd of caribou in Alaska. He worked at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the WA State Department Of Natural Resources as a forest research biologist for 25 years, retiring in 1988. During this time he developed the first black bear radio tracking system and co-authored the book "Black Bear of Washington" with Richard J. Poelker. As a long-time resident of Olympia, Harry was active in the Tumwater VFW Post 7089 and former quartermaster for 8 years. He was also an active participant in the Sound Singles Club and Lacey Senior Center Dancing. He was pre-deceased by his wife Rosemary ("Rosie") Abbott; survived by his step-daughter Rebel Romero of Tumwater; sister Alice Godfrey, of East Fairfield, VT; brother Frederick of Conway, NH; nieces Carol Brown of Westford, VT; Judy Godfrey of Wilbraham, MA; Martha Burns of East Fairfield, VT; and nephew Robert Godfrey of Southampton, MA, as well as extended family and many friends. Special thanks go to caregiver Judy Carpenter and others at the Catholic Community Services of Olympia. A memorial service will be held at Mills & Mills Funeral Home, 5725 Littlerock Rd SW, Tumwater, WA, Friday, February 3, at 11 a.m. Followed by an inurnment ceremony.
