July 19th, 1930. Hershel was born to Henry and Eva Carpenter in Fairview Oklahoma. The family moved to Montana in the 1940s and farmed north of Belgrade for many years. Hershel married Mary Francis Slaght on January 26th, 1950 and continued to live in Montana until 2007 when they moved to Moses Lake, Washington to be closer to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Hershel devoted a large portion of his life to the Lions Club where he made many lifelong friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was always willing to teach the finer art of these sports. He received the most enjoyment by being close to his family and friends.
Hershel was a gentle man. All who met him were immediately drawn to his kindness and good heartedness. Hershel’s most endearing quality was having the right thing to say at the right time. All would agree that he spoke more in fewer words than anybody else.
On December 16, 2012, Hershel passed away in Olympia, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Bill Jepson, and step grandson Clinton Johnson. He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Mary Francis Slaght Carpenter, daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Tim Jacobsen, son and daughter-in-law David and Colleen Carpenter, grandchildren Brian and Jennifer Jacobsen, Matthew and Amanda Jacobsen, and great grandchildren Kate, Nicholas, Violet and Lyla Jacobsen.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be announced at later date.
