"Jeannie"
March 7, 1939 – January 25, 2025
Jean Madeline Trotman Byfield, beloved sister, sister-in-law, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, co-worker, loving neighbor and friend, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, in University Place, Washington, at the age of 85. Born on March 7, 1939, in Panama City, Panama to the late Dudley and Maud Trotman, Jean lived a life full of love, faith, and purpose. She called many places home over the years, from the vibrant streets of Brooklyn, New York, to the sunny shores of Miami, Florida, and ultimately to University Place, Washington.
Jean's life was a testament to devotion—devotion to God, to family, and to her work. A firm believer in living by God's word, she had a heart full of compassion for those from all walks of life. She especially felt a deep connection to diversity and culture, often expressing her love for different foods and customs. A dedicated professional, Jean retired in 2010 after 30 years as a billing representative at Baptist Hospital in South Florida, where her commitment and hard work touched the lives of many.
Known affectionately as "Lil Jeannie" due to her petite frame, Jean had a magnetic presence that could light up any room. She was a fiercely loving mother to her only daughter, Mellie, and a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother to a growing legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean’s warmth extended to all who knew her, and her legacy of love, joy, and generosity will never be forgotten.
In her free time, Jean was an avid fan of fashion, crafts, cooking shows, music, and dancing. But it was her love for butterflies that truly captured the hearts of those around her. Symbolizing freedom and transformation, butterflies were a reflection of Jean’s own vibrant spirit. Her faith was also an important part of her life, and she was a devoted member of Sweet Homes Baptist Church, where she found great joy in being part of a close-knit community. TD Jakes was a pastor she admired deeply.
Jean’s infectious enthusiasm for life and her boundless goodwill were felt by all who had the pleasure of calling her a friend. Many will forever cherish the special trips and unforgettable memories shared with her, as she knew how to turn any moment into a celebration of life.
Jean was preceded in death by her loving parents, Dudley and Maud Trotman; her dear brothers, Eustace and Luther Trotman; and her cherished nephew, Derrick Trotman.
She is survived by her beloved sister and brothers, Clemencia, Basil, and Daniel; devoted daughter, Mellie; grandchildren, Roman and Krystal, and great-grandchildren, Milo and Kaylise; as well as a host of nieces and nephews and her dear friends from Sweet Homes Baptist Church and the "305 Crew".
The family wishes to express their love and appreciation to the caretakers, nurses, doctors and staff at University Place Assisted living and University Hospice for their amazing care of Jean.
While Jean's physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit, love, and the countless memories she leaves behind will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will forever be remembered for her kindness, her strength, and her unwavering love for family, friends, and all of God's creations.
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to your local leukemia foundation.
