Jimmie Lee Sheler was born in Albany, Oregon on June 16, 1947 to Lawrence and Leota (Williamson) Sheler. Jim graduated from Albany High School in 1965, and graduated from Oregon State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Administration.
Jim began his Recreation career working in Corvallis and Albany, Oregon and was appointed as Lacey’s first Parks Director in 1974. Over the next 35 years, Jim oversaw expansion of the parks system to 26 locations encompassing more than 500 acres, including Rainier Vista Park, the Regional Athletic Complex, the Lacey Community Center, and Senior Center. He also initiated a highly regarded comprehensive recreation program for the community. Jim retired in 2009.
Jim was a member of the Washington Recreation and Parks Association and was honored with the WRPA Distinguished Service Award in 2010.
In June 1998, Jim married the love of his life Sammy. They were blessed to share 20 years of love and laughter. Jim is survived by his wife Sammy of the family home, step-sons Korey (Flicka) and Peter (Carolyn), and 6 grandchildren, his younger brother Michael (Patty).
He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Barry.
A Celebration of Life will occur on Friday, May 3, 1:00 pm at Mills & Mills, Tumwater.
