

Dr. Joel Waylon Black (May 11,1941 ) Col USA RET was born in a small southern town, Inman, S.C. He graduated from the local high school, Chapman High, in 1959. He then attained a B.S. degree from North Georgia (military) College in 1963, followed by an M. D. degree from the medical college of S.C. in 1967.
He entered active military service in 1967 and served 20 years in military teaching centers, Letterman Army Medical Center, in San Francisco; Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, in Denver; and 14 years at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma where he served as Director of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care.
He retired in 1987 and entered private practice in Olympia, Washington as a part of Olympia Multispecialty Clinic, and then his own private practice Respiratory Physicians Of Southwest WA. practicing Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine. He retired in December of 2013.
He was a fellow of The American College of Physicians; American College of Chest Physicians; American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and certified by the board of Allergy and Immunology.
He is survived by his loving wife Marlene (Lipp) who he has adored from the moment they met. They have enjoyed a wonderful life together since their marriage, December 10, 1969. They have been blessed by 2 children Joel W II Gig Harbor WA; and Stephanie (Gratz) in Jacksonville Fla. and 6 wonderful grandchildren: Abigail, Benjamin, Cameron, Taylor, Alexis, and Zachary who have provided such love, satisfaction , joy, and fun. He is survived by two older brothers, Steedly and Wendell Black; and two older sisters Evangeline (Lane) and Alice (Wadman).
Waylon has had a love of music and loves to sing with the choir, small groups, and to perform jazz solos. Waylon and Marlene are familiar figures on the ballroom dance floors from Centralia to Seattle. He is a member of the OUUC Church in Olympia.
