

Joel Martin Zappalo was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Elinor and Frank Zappalo. During his adolescence, the family moved to Washington State and settled in Renton, where Joel later graduated from Renton High School. He continued on to college, earning a degree in engineering—an early reflection of his remarkable talent for problem-solving and his passion for model building.
Joel was a gifted engineer whose career led him to The Boeing Company, where he dedicated many years of expertise and craftsmanship.
A true gadget-lover, Joel was always up to date with the latest technology and could be found unboxing his newest acquisition,
A devoted father, Joel raised his children with tenderness, love, and unwavering care. He cherished time spent camping, hunting, and simply being with the people he loved. After retiring, he and his wife Jennifer made their home in Ocean Shores, to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the beach.
Joel deeply loved God, and his family. His faith and family meant a great deal to him and was the foundation beneath his happy nature.
Joel had a gentle spirit and an extraordinary ability to see the best in everyone. He never spoke an unkind word, and his smile warmed your heart. His kindness, humility, and joyful nature left a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
Joel is survived by his wife Jennifer; his son Mark Zappalo; his daughter Debora Lewis; Grandchildren: Valarie, Justin and Christie; Great Grandchildren Airika, Zoe, Kyan and Kylee; Stepson Adam Lathrop; Stepdaughter Janice Gyamfi; Step-grandchildren: Deyana, Philip, Leyasha, Natasha, Aryana, Lucy, Anabelle, and Maggie, Step-Great Grandchildren Ximena and Kayahri.
He will be missed by all, loved forever, and never forgotten.
A Celebration of his Life will be held in April 2026.
