He served as a recruit, then as a Sergeant where was stationed in Japan and Korea with the 25th Infantry Division. In 1952 he switched his branch of service to the Air Force. He was first stationed in Mississippi for schooling as a Radio Operator/Navigator. Les was then sent to his new station in Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. Sometime later he was sent to Illinois to become an Aircraft Mechanic, which meant further schooling. He also served in North Dakota as an Aircraft Mechanic working on B52 Bombers and KC135 Aerial Refueling Tankers. Eventually he was stationed in Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base attached to the Strategic Air Command, an Airborne Command Post. Les traveled to Egypt in 1965 serving the Air Attaché at the United States Embassy in Cairo. While stationed in Cairo, he traveled to different parts of Africa as well as other countries in Europe, such as: Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Greece, Italy and Germany. Returning to the States he also served in Viet-Nam. Les later served his country in the United Kingdom stationed at Mildenhall Air Force base just southeast of London, England.
He retired in September of 1972 here in Washington, which is where he was born and raised as a child. During his time of service he was also married and became the father of four children who were fortunate enough to travel to some of the places that he was stationed in. His children were all born in different places that he had served; each was born in a different state. It was a great opportunity to see and experience the different cultures as they traveled with their Father, which is far better than any education from a textbook. God Bless America!
