Lillian Florence Johnston

Lillian Johnston, 85, of Olympia Washington died at home on June 13, 2014, exactly 6 weeks after her husband of 66 years died. Lillian was born on November 10, 1928 to James and Bertha (Cowan) McGovern. She grew up in Olympia and spent most of her childhood on Sleater Kinney Road. Lillian attended South Bay School, then graduated from Olympia High School in 1947. The Army brought the love of her life, John J Johnston, to Fort Lewis and they married in 1947. After John’s retirement they spent many years living in Cannon Beach and Tillamook, OR, moving back to Olympia 10 years ago to be closer to family.

Lillian’s grandparents, Adam and Lavina (McCay) Cowan were pioneer settlers on Harstine Island in the 1890’s. They ran a tow boat, running freight and passengers between the island and Olympia. Her “Grandpa Sheridan” was an early settler in the Gull Harbor area and for a time was a caretaker for the Dofflemyer Lighthouse. Lillian was born in his house and had fond memories of living on his farm when she was young.

After raising her children Lillian enjoyed many artistic endeavors. She collected and made quilts, many of which are still being used by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She learned to play the guitar, painted, knitted sweaters, made teddy bears and taught herself woodworking, making decorative items to sell. She volunteered helping grade school children with reading, and made quilts for the Linus Project for babies with life threatening health problems.

Lillian is survived daughters Claudia Johnston; Jonny (John) Kobylus; and Judith (Philip) Shave. She was fondly known as Grandma Ocean by 6 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband John, her parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister and 3 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be held Wednesday July 9, 2014 at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Oddfellows Cemetery at 1:00pm
