
Marlin was born in November of 1931 in Dunning Nebraska to father James Ross and mother Anna Catherine (Treat) Anderson. He began school at the age of four and his family later moved to Merna Nebraska when he was in the eighth grade. After his freshman year of high school, his family moved to Klamath Falls Oregon, followed shortly by another move to Westfir Oregon where he attended and later graduated from Oakridge High School at the age of seventeen.
He got his first job at the Shell Service Station in Oakridge until he received his draft notice. In April of 1952, he entered the US army where he served for eight years. He was drafted as a PVT-2 and was promoted to Sargent within his two years on active duty. The remaining six years were spent in the US Army Reserve. Upon his discharge from the army he was hired as a data input specialist with Hines Lumber and Plywood Company in Westfir Oregon and within a year was promoted to Senior Management over the entire Information Processing section.
On August 22, 1964, he married Darlene Kirschenmann and on January 2, ‘65 he enrolled at the University of Oregon in Eugene, later graduating with honors in Business Administration. On December 3 of the following year, Marlin and Darlene welcomed their first child, Lori Deneé into the world.
Marlin later accepted a position with the Boeing Company in Seattle Washington in April of 1969 as a computer systems analyst, working on the SST project until April of 1970. The project, also known as Boeing 2707, was the first American supersonic transport plane developed.
In August of that year, he accepted a position with the State of Washington in the Information Systems Unit. He was a manager there until he retired in January of 1996. His second daughter, Kristie Reneé was born February 25, 1972.
Marlin was the oldest of four children. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, step-father, Prentice Wheeler, sister Shirly Sabo and brother Gordon Anderson. Marlin passed away after a fourteen month battle with cancer.
He enjoyed gardening, interacting with his grandchildren, watching sports, and birdwatching. He also loved to play the piano and organ.
Marlin is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Darlene Anderson, two daughters, Lori Hill and Kristie Ripley, ten nieces and nephews, his brother Maury Anderson, and five grandchildren: Breanna, AJ, and Arianna Hill and Dreydan and A’zya Ripley.
A memorial service will be held at two p.m. on January 4th, 2014 at Evergreen Christian Community. 1000 Black Lake Blvd SW, Olympia WA 98502.
