Mary Mertens, born on December 30, 1958, in Lewis-McChord, WA, peacefully passed away on March 29, 2024, after courageously battling cancer for four years.
Mary was the beloved daughter of Wallace and Doris Vaught and was raised in Lakewood, Wa alongside her three older sisters and brother.
She attended Saint Martin’s University in Olympia, where she spent four transformative years not only pursuing her education but also creating lifelong friendships.
In 1983 these friendships led her to meeting the love of her life, Terry, with whom she shared a beautiful life and raised two wonderful daughters, Kathryn and Nicole. Her two daughters were the ultimate love of her life, sparing nothing to make them feel loved, supported and admired.
Mary’s professional journey was marked by dedication and compassion. She worked at the Olympia Brewery, offering insightful and humorous tours, before dedicating over three decades of her life to the Providence Healthcare System. There, she served as a Senior Human Resources Consultant until her retirement in 2019.
Her passions were as varied as they were heartfelt. Mary found immense joy in spending time with her husband and daughters. She was an avid reader, skilled seamstress (particularly in crafting costumes), and a master at preparing holiday meals that brought her loved ones together. A gracious host, Mary cherished moments spent surrounded by family and friends. Mary found solace in the companionship of her dogs, the serenity of ocean beaches, and the adventures of travel. Over the last few years Mary found the ultimate joy in spoiling her grandchildren. Her head snuggles, story telling and singing were always adored by her grandchildren.
Described as selfless, caring, and endlessly optimistic, Mary touched the lives of all who knew her. Her dedication to her family was unwavering, and her commitment to personal growth was an inspiration to many. She had a wonderful sense of humor, always finding joy in laughter and effortlessly putting others at ease.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Terry Mertens. Her daughter Kathryn Banning and son-in-law Zach along with their children Jack and Bennett. Her daughter Nicole Dunn and son-in-law Derrick and their daughter Mia. Her mother Doris Vaught, and her siblings Patty Smith, Sandi Balcerak, Dan Vaught, and Theresa Benzel. She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Vaught.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Multicare Oncology Department for their compassionate care over the past 4 years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society and/or Brigadoon Service Dogs in Bellingham, WA, would be greatly appreciated.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Friday, April 12, at 1pm at Mills & Mills in Tumwater, Wa. A time for gathering, along with food and beverages, will follow, as we honor Mary's beautiful life and legacy
