Robert Charles Gleason “Bob” (former last name Coles) was born June 16, 1935 at Mt. Vernon, WA and passed away in Olympia, WA July 27, 2021 at the age of 86. Bob graduated from Saint Martin’s High school in 1953 and also attended college at Saint Martins for two years before joining the Navy in 1955. Bob was on active duty in the Navy from 1955 until 1959 and then served in the Navy Reserves until 1963. During active duty he traveled extensively in the Middle East and Africa. After his active duty Naval service, Bob married Norma A. Craig in Olympia WA. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Bob worked for many years at the Washington State Licensing Department as a Systems Analyst until his retirement. After retirement, he taught computer courses at Grays Harbor Community College. He also volunteered with the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport, helping to build the tall ship “Lady Washington.” Other hobbies included fishing, boat building, wood working, and historical research. Bob had a lifelong interest in military history and especially ships and shipbuilding. He also published a journal article reconstructing historic ship building practices.
Bob is survived by his wife Norma, daughter Ann, daughter-in-law Signe, and brother Brian McCormick, as well as 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Lisette Gleason and son Greg Gleason.
