Russell Karl Fields Russ, 90, was born June 27, 1921 in Salem, Oregon to Russell B. and Olive Fields, and passed away February 15, 2012. He is survived by his children, Karl Fields (Patty) of Fremont, CA, Janice Meeds (Jim) of Lacey, and Lorie Butz (Greg) of Spokane; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marlyn and their son, Paul. Russ graduated from the University of Washington in 1943, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and played French Horn in the band. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from March 1942 to January 1946 and participated in the Guam and Iwo Jima campaigns. After returning from WWII, Russ went to work for Pan American Airlines where he met the love of his life, Marlyn. They married March 14, 1947. Russ was a business manager in the automotive industry in Olympia, Spokane and Santa Cruz, until his retirement in 1988. During their initial 17 years in Olympia, Russ was an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts and a member of the United Methodist Church. After retirement, the couple returned to Olympia for 5 years, then spent 5 years on Maui. After returning to Olympia in 1998, Russ volunteered with Mended Hearts. Russ was an intelligent, kind and gracious man with a subtle sense of humor who loved his family dearly. He will be missed by all who knew him.
