Sharon is survived by children Kelley (Vikki), Jamie (John) and Brian (Holly); her sisters Patty and Barbara (Dick); and her grandchildren, Ken, Ericka, Kade, Max, Wyatt, Ty and Ally. Her mother, father and husband, preceded her in death.
Sharon was born on September 18, 1942 in Everett, Washington, to parents Norman and Maxine Reklev. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1960 then met and married Bob Dorning in 1961. They relocated to Kirkland, Washington where they had three children together. Bob passed away in 1973 and Sharon raised their children on her own. Following her husband’s death, Sharon moved her family to Redmond, Washington where she accepted a position as a receptionist at Emil’s Concrete Construction Company where she later became part owner. After more than 20 years, she got her Real Estate license and later her Broker’s license. During this time, Sharon was elected to several positions with the City of Redmond. She served eight years on the Design Review Board and eight years on the Redmond City Council, where she was well known and well respected for her ability to see both sides of every situation and develop considered solutions to issues.
Family was everything to Sharon. Her children remember her always somehow being at every sporting event, even when there were multiple games at the same time. They have many memories spent at the beach in Olympia with Sharon’s mom, (affectionately referred to as Grannywitch), regular trips to Ocean Shores for razor clam digging and to Manzanita, Oregon with their extended family. Sharon took her kids on trips to enjoy Disney in both Florida and California, a Caribbean cruise with the twins, and an especially memorable trip to China in 2001. Sharon loved to travel and took a number of trips with friends to places like Mexico, New Orleans and a cruise through the Panama Canal to name just a few. She experienced the beauty of Alaska when she visited her sister’s family. She was blessed to travel to Norway for a Reklev family reunion.
Sharon was a socially active woman who was deeply involved in her community wherever she went. She enjoyed coaching her children’s soccer teams, and spending time with her extended family. Her family and friends will always remember her being larger than life, quick to laugh with a wicked sense of humor and a beautiful smile. She was quick with advice and never hesitated to offer her insight when she thought her experience would be an asset to her family and friends.
Sharon was very successful in Real Estate until her retirement in 2002. Following her retirement, she moved to her happy place at the beach, in Carlyon Beach Country Club in Olympia, Washington. She spent her final years living life near her sisters at the beach, volunteering for the Board of Trustees and the activities committee and she lived for any time she could spend surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Sharon’s friends and family on October 28th at 1:00 PM at the Carlyon Beach Clubhouse at 2719 Island Drive, Olympia, WA 98502. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sharon’s life. The family would like to thank Vivian, Rick and Taylor Jensen for their support during this horrible time.
Sharon’s 76th birthday was September 18th, the day after she gained her wings. It was her birthday wish that in lieu of gifts, people donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, through which she raised $275. It is her children’s wish that we continue this in lieu of flowers.
