Alice Bertao Martins, age 99, of Modesto, California, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Modesto, surrounded by family, on Sunday, August 24, 2025. She was born in Raminho, Terceira, Açores to Lourdes Bertão and José Machado Bertão.
Alice was a strong, independent woman who lived a simple and faithful life. She worked for many years at a nursery, which gave her a lasting appreciation for flowers grown in the soil and time spent outdoors. From 1989 to 2011, she lovingly operated a daycare for 22 years, an endeavor that was very important and deeply fulfilling to her. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Modesto. Above all, she cared deeply for her family and took pride in their accomplishments.
She is survived by her children: Jorge Antonio Martins of Modesto, José Henrique Martins of Riverbank, Mary Lou Carvalho (José) of Modesto, and Mario Rui Martins-Sandaga (Ruben) of Modesto. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Lisa Vongiese (Mark), Michelle Gillespie (Jim), Joey Martins (Lindsey), Stephen Carvalho (Micall), Mario Carvalho (Kristine), Jackie Martins, George Martins Jr., and Michael Martins.
Alice leaves behind seventeen great-grandchildren: David Vongiese, Natalie Vongiese, Tanya Vongiese, Logan Gillespie, Landon Gillespie, Adison Martins, Mia Martins, Owen Martins, Charley Carvalho, Riley Carvalho, Corey Carvalho, Kane Carvalho, Takeo Carvalho, Kassie Martins, Mikey Martins, Elizza Martins, and Kaylee Martins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mario Manuel Martins; her daughter-in-law, Elsa Martins; her parents, José Machado Bertão and Lourdes Bertão; her siblings, Antonio Bertão, Odette Avila, and Clarence Bertão; and her granddaughter, Jennifer Martins.
A visitation for Alice will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home, located at 900 Santa Fe Avenue, Hughson, CA 95326. Following the visitation, a recitation of the Rosary will take place at 6:00 PM at Lakewood Memorial Park.
A funeral mass will occur Friday, September 5, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 19399 CA-120, Ripon, California 95366.
Private committal service (burial) will follow.
Alice Bertão Martins, com 99 anos, residente em Modesto, Califórnia, faleceu em casa de sua filha em Modesto, no domingo, dia 24 de agosto de 2025. Viveu em Modesto durante os últimos 48 anos.
A Sra. Martins nasceu no Raminho, ilha Terceira, Açores, filha de Lourdes Bertão e José Machado Bertão.
Deixa de luto os seus filhos: Jorge António Martins de Modesto, José Henrique Martins de Riverbank, Mary Lou Carvalho (José) de Modesto, e Mário Rui Martins-Sandaga (Ruben) de Modesto; os seus netos: Lisa Vongeise (Marco), Michelle Gillespie (Jim), Joey Martins (Lindsey), Stephen Carvalho (Micall), Mário Carvalho (Kristine), Jackie Martins, Michael Martins e George Martins Jr.; assim como pelos seus 17 bisnetos, e por vários sobrinhos, sobrinhas e familiares.
Foi precedida na morte pelo seu esposo, Mário Manuel Martins; a sua nora, Elsa Martins; seus pais, José Machado Bertão e Lourdes Bertão; seus irmãos, António Bertão, Odette Avila e Clarence Bertão; e a sua neta, Jennifer Martins.
O velorio será na quinta-feira, dia 4 de setembro de 2025, das 4h às 6h. na Lakewood Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel 900 Santa Fe Avenue, Hughson, CA 95326 Seguidamente, será a recitacão do Terço às 6h no Lakewood Memorial Park Riverside Chapel.
A Missa de Corpo Presente será na sexta-feira, dia 5 de setembro de 2025, às 10h30, na Igreja Católica de São Patrício, 19399 CA-120, Ripon, Califórnia 95366.
O sepultamento privado realizar-se-á em seguida.
