Bertha Garcia Vento

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Bertha Garcia Vento, affectionately known by all as “Nana.” She passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Bertha was born on December 7, 1934, in La Feria, Texas, to Sabina Castillo and Romaldo Garcia. She later married the love of her life, Manuel Vento, in La Feria. Manuel proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War in 1950-1953
After completing his military service, Manuel remained at the Army base as a chef. Following the base’s closure, he and Bertha moved from Harlingen, Texas, to California around 1963–1964 in search of new opportunities, eventually settling in Patterson.
Together, they became part of Patterson’s history when they opened Master Chef in 1967, one of the first mobile food trucks in Stanislaus County. The truck quickly became a local favorite, serving classic American and Mexican favorites that generations of Patterson families came to love. Longtime residents still talk about the unforgettable flavor of the food and often say no one has ever been able to replicate it. Following the success of their food truck, Bertha and Manuel opened the Master Chef Restaurant in the mid-1970s, where they continued serving the community with the same homemade food and warm hospitality that made them a Patterson tradition.
Bertha also worked at Hank’s Coffee Shop, known to many simply as “The Coffee Shop,” where she continued doing what she loved most serving others with a warm smile and a strong work ethic.
She was a woman who never sat still. Whether she was gardening, raking leaves, sweeping sidewalks and driveways, or simply enjoying the outdoors, Bertha found joy in hard work. Her greatest passion was gardening, and she also loved attending dances, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying a scoop of her favorite ice cream.
Bertha experienced tremendous loss throughout her life, including the passing of her beloved husband Manuel and later her daughter Enedelia “Annie”. Despite life’s hardships, she remained resilient, loving, and devoted to her family.
For more than 40 years, Bertha made her home with her son Noel Vento, daughter-in-law Maria Vento, and grandchildren Cassidy Lindo (Robert), Vanessa Vento, and Neil Vento (Krisha). Their home was filled with love, family, and countless cherished memories. Noel and Maria cared for Bertha with love, compassion, and dedication, allowing her to remain surrounded by family throughout her later years. They faithfully stood by her side until her peaceful passing.
She is survived by her sons Noel Vento (Maria), Jorge Vento (Susan), and Eloy Vento (Heidi), her brother Eugene “Joe” Garcia (Olga), and 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; extended family members and many dear friends whose lives she touched.
To her family, she was simply Nana a source of unconditional love, strength, comfort, and wisdom. Her legacy lives on not only through her family but also through the memories of everyone who knew her and the community she helped nourish through her family’s businesses.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with those who went before her. Her love, kindness, determination, and hardworking spirit will never be forgotten.
