John was born on April 16, 1962 to Tonia Gaston in Detroit, Michigan and has always been known for his sunny disposition and ability to light up a room as soon as he enters it. He was big on talking, and anyone who knew him probably has a story it. He had a gift for making people laugh, and his sense of humor was one of the many things that made him so special.
John was a natural jokester, the life of the party, and the kind of person whose presence made any gathering more lively. He truly enjoyed seeing those around him happy and if he could do anything or say anything to create a memorable moment, he did.
A great way to describe John is full of life and full of love. He loved people deeply and never wanted to see anyone in pain. If someone was hurting, he would do whatever he could to bring a smile to their face. Whether it was through a joke, a funny story, a long conversation, or simply being there, he had a way of reminding people that they were not alone.
In 1999, he married Anna, the love of his life, and from that day forward he was truly devoted to her and their family. Their marriage was built on love, loyalty, laughter, and a deep commitment to one another. His family was at the center of his heart, and John cherished the life they built together. He was a husband who loved deeply, a family man who gave wholeheartedly, and someone who took great pride in the people he loved.
Above all, John was kind. His kindness was genuine and came from the heart. He treated people with warmth and compassion, and he left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He will be remembered for his laughter, his stories, his jokes, his big personality, and, most of all, his big heart.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Anna L. Gaston, his children Paul “PJ” Lopez, Tamika Gaston, Isaac Lopez, Ke'Vana Gaston, Nathan Lopez and Jordan Thomas Dean Gaston, his grandchildren Lupe Herrera, Roca NaLu Lopez, and Mico Herrera, and his brothers Teddy Phillips and Levi Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his son, Joshua David Gaston, his mother Tonia Gaston, his brother Tony Phillips, his grandmother Grandma Baker, his brother-in-law Michael Cervantes, and his sister-in-law Mary Lou Cervantes.
Though his voice may be quiet now, the laughter he shared and the love he gave will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
