Leo was a man of great intelligence, curiosity, and character. He valued his solitude but had a remarkable way with people. Although he often claimed he wasn't a social person, he could strike up a conversation with just about anyone on various topics. His warm personality, quick wit, and unmistakable laugh left a lasting impression. In fact, his coworkers often knew Leo had arrived simply by hearing his big laugh.
A lifelong learner, Leo had a passion for reading, particularly books about action/crime thrillers and military history. He was fascinated by airplanes, trains, and old Mexican busses, enjoyed music of every genre, and believed in keeping both his mind and body active. A devoted sports fan, he proudly cheered for the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and his favorite soccer clubs, América, Barcelona, and Manchester. He also appreciated life's simple pleasures, especially a good weekend cafecito and anything sweet. His particular love for cookies earned him the affectionate nickname "Cookie Monster."
Leo had an extraordinary soft spot for animals. He fostered cats and was known for caring for strays and any animal that crossed his path in need of kindness. His compassion for animals was simply part of who he was.
His Catholic faith was an important foundation in his life, guiding his values and the way he cared for those around him. Leo found peace in the hills of Diablo Grande, where he and his beloved wife of 38 years, Susan, built a beautiful life together. Above all, he was proud to be a husband, a father to his three girls, and a grandfather. His family was his greatest joy, and the life they shared meant everything to him.
Leo is survived by his loving wife, Susan Mercado; his daughters, Susie Mercado, Stacy Samarripa (William), and Stephanie Mercado; his cherished granddaughter, Cora James Samarripa; and various siblings.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leo will be remembered for his intelligence, his generous heart, his wonderful sense of humor, and the unmistakable sound of his laughter.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 12:30 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1200 Lyons Avenue, Turlock, California 95380.
May his soul find eternal rest in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
