Maria de Fátima Rocha Pires, 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Hilmar, California, on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Pentecost Sunday, surrounded by her loving family. She had called Hilmar home for the past 45 years.
Born in Doze Ribeiras, Terceira, Azores, Maria de Fátima was the daughter of António Contente de Melo and Mariana da Conceição Rocha.
She shared 63 loving years of marriage with her beloved husband, Francisco Rocha Pires, who preceded her in death on August 8, 2021. Together they built a life centered on faith, hard work, and devotion to their family.
Nothing brought Maria de Fátima greater joy than her family. She had a special devotion to her grandchildren, whom she helped raise with endless love, patience, and care.
She loved traveling to Europe and her beloved homeland of Terceira in the Azores, shopping and enjoying lunch outings with her daughter Connie, and spending meaningful time with her son Adrian and extended family. Whether gathered around her table or simply visiting together, family was always what mattered most to her.
She cared for those she loved not only with encouragement, positivity, and unwavering support, but also through the meals she lovingly prepared. Maria de Fátima was well known for her Alcatra, famous feijão guisado, and fresh homemade bread; dishes that became cherished family traditions and brought everyone together.
Maria de Fátima was the only daughter in a family of seven children with six brothers. After losing her mother at the young age of 21, she stepped into the role of caregiver and mother figure for her two younger siblings; offering them love, guidance, and support during a difficult time.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie Lourenço (Joe) of Hilmar, California; son, Adrian Pires (Liz) of Stevinson, California; brothers, Jorge Rocha Melo (Juvenália) of Half Moon Bay, California, and Humberto de Melo of Cerritos, California; sisters-in-law, Fátima Melo of Doze Ribeiras, Terceira, Azores, and Paulina Melo of Santa Bárbara, Terceira, Azores; granddaughter, Megan Sousa (Jonathon); grandsons, Eric Lourenço (Sarah), Andrew Pires, and Conner Pires; and great-grandchildren, Raelyn Marie Sousa and Easton Jon Sousa, along with many extended family members in California and the Azores.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco Rocha Pires; father, António Contente de Melo; mother, Mariana da Conceição Rocha; brothers, José Contente de Melo, Agostinho da Rocha Melo, Juvenal da Rocha Melo, and António da Rocha Melo; and sisters-in-law, Maria Susana Melo, Lúcia Melo, and Maria da Conceição Rocha de Melo.
Maria de Fátima was a devoted parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hilmar, California, and a member of Our Lady of Miracles Catholic Church in Gustine, California. She was a woman of deep faith, kindness, and quiet strength. Her Catholic faith guided her throughout her life, and she faithfully prayed the Rosary every night. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion, strength, kindness, and faith that will continue to guide and sustain those who loved her most.
