Maria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was centered around faith, family, and home. She had a deep love for sewing and crocheting, and found great joy in cooking, baking, tending to her plants, and keeping a tidy house and yard. Her hands were always busy, and her heart was always full. She was a woman of unwavering faith who spent countless hours in prayer for her beloved family.
Maria was a member of Our Lady of Fatima, Thornton, Our Lady of Miracles, Gustine, and a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Merced. She was also a proud member of the S.E.S. (Sociedade do Espírito Santo).
Maria is survived by her son, John Silva (Kristina) of Sacramento, California; her daughters, Filomena Nunes (Antonio) of Merced, California and Diane Marcotte (Matthew) of Elk Grove, California; her sisters, Vielmina Pires Rocha of Ladeira Grande, Ribeirinha, Terceira, Açores , Fatima Pires of Acampo, California, and Merces Morais of Ontario, Canada; her grandchildren, Sandra Schoonhoven (Jason), Allison Ponceano (Paul), Kristine Nunes (Cody Souza), Nathan Silva, Rebekah Silva, Robert Silva, Julia Marcotte, and Amanda Marcotte; and her great-grandchildren, Emily Schoonhoven, Grant Schoonhoven, Claire Schoonhoven, Aubrey Ponceano, Landon Ponceano, and Brady Ponceano; her sisters-in-law; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, João Gonçalves Silva; her parents, João Cardoso Pires and Maria Julia Pires; and her sisters, Sisaltina Pires and Mary Machado.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service, 286 West Main Street, Turlock, CA 95380. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at 7:00 PM at the same location.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Parish, 671 E Yosemite Ave, Merced, CA 95340. Committal will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 260 W Childs Ave, Merced, CA 95341.
Pallbearers will be Jason Schoonhoven, Paul Ponceano, Cody Souza, Nathan Silva, Robert Silva and Grant Schoonhoven.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Landon Ponceano and Brady Ponceano.
Maria Julia Silva will be remembered for her strong spirit, steadfast faith, and enduring love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion and grace that will continue to live on through those who loved her.
Maria Júlia Silva, com 88 anos, residente em Merced, Califórnia, faleceu em casa da sua filha, em Merced, na sexta-feira, dia 22 de agosto de 2025. Viveu em Merced nos últimos 24 anos.
A Sra. Silva nasceu na freguesia da Feteira, ilha Terceira, Açores, filha de Maria Júlia Pires e João Cardoso Pires.
Deixa de luto o seu filho, John Silva (Kristina) de Sacramento, Califórnia; as suas filhas, Filomena Nunes (António) de Merced, Califórnia, e Diane Marcotte (Matthew) de Elk Grove, Califórnia; as suas irmãs, Vielmina Pires Rocha da Ladeira Grande, Ribeirinha, Terceira, Açores, Fátima Pires de Acampo, Califórnia, e Mercês Morais de Ontário, Canadá. Deixa ainda 8 netos, 6 bisnetos, as suas cunhadas, e muitos sobrinhos e sobrinhas muito estimados.
A Sra. Silva foi precedida na morte pelo seu esposo, João Gonçalves Silva; pelos seus pais, João Cardoso Pires e Maria Júlia Pires; e pelas suas irmãs, Sisaltina Pires e Mary Machado.
Foi membro das Sociedades de Nossa Senhora de Fátima em Thornton, de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres em Gustine, e frequentadora fiel da Igreja Católica do Sagrado Coração em Merced. Foi também membro orgulhosa da Sociedade do Espírito Santo (S.E.S.).
O velório será na terça-feira, dia 2 de setembro de 2025, das 5h às 7h da noite na Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service, 286 West Main Street, Turlock, Califórnia 95380, seguindo-se a recitação do Santo Terço às 7h, no mesmo local.
A Missa de Corpo Presente será na quarta-feira, dia 3 de setembro de 2025, às 11h da manhã na Paróquia de São Patrício, 671 E Yosemite Ave, Merced, Califórnia 95340, seguindo-se o enterro no Cemitério Calvary, 260 W Childs Ave, Merced, Califórnia 95341.
