To Dot and Family, my sincere condolences for your loss. To ATO and the many he has influenced, his loss creates a hole that will never be filled. He was a mentor, friend and one of the finest human beings I have ever known. RIP, Brother Burns.

Barry and Family, Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Burns. He was a gentleman in all rights. He was so kind to me during our time at Calvary Baptist, and I always looked forward to talking to him on Sunday's when we arrived at church. Truly a great Christian man.

My deepest condolences to each of you, I was saddened to learn of Amos' death. He was a great help on our Burns genealogy, as his Grandfather Henry Burns was also my Great Grandfather, found out we were half 2nd cousins.

To the Burns family: I am traveling in California on a work project and meeting up with Jane today as she, too, is here in California for work. Wish we could be there for your family, but we are in our prayers of comfort. Amos encouraged me, as I transfered from Alabama  after having been an ATO pledge in the fall of 1978 to UAB in 1979. Because of Amos, a group of us started an Interest group, became a Colony, and then received a Charter as an ATO- Theta Phi Chapter in the fall of 1980. There were 29 young men, and 1 honor initiate, my father that became ATO's because of the father like leadership of Amos Burns in guidance as we became ATO's. To honor Amos as our mentor in leadership that year, the UAB ATO chapter originated our top award that would be given annually to best all around ATO brother, tops in scholarship and in character, the Amos D. Burns Award. Here is what I had inscribed on this Award: "Inspired by principles of Christianity and Fraternity, he serves ATO with a Constant, Dangerous, and Expensive Loyalty". That was Amos Burns! Thanks be to God for the life of Amos Burns. He encouraged me. He was my friend. He was a mentor and friend to so many folks. To the Burns family from Jane, Lindsey, me: Grace & Peace

Mr. Burns i.e. Amos as we called him was a role model for all men. He as well as Mrs. Burns treated me like I was one of their own which had a great impact on my life at a time when I needed it most.  

Their influence along with Barry's friendship helped shape my life.  Mr. Burns was a man who inspired and impacted many peoples lives.  What a great legacy!  

I will greatly miss Mr. Burns, but will have many fond memories from which to remember him by.

extended family through Alpha Tau Omega

One of the finest gentlemen that has ever been a resident of the Tuscaloosa community, and his service to the University of Alabama's ATO family and worldwide membership is an example of service, loyalty, sincere kindness and service to his fellow mankind.  He touched thousands of lives to build young men into the gentlemen they are today.  A friend once stated that you could see his influence on the members of the chapter participants 50 years after his first involvement.

Mr. Burns was a true gentleman. I was fortunate to have known him as a young man, and appreciate all that he did for my fraternity brothers and myself. Godspeed Brother Burns.
