Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 11:00 am at Memory Hill Gardens with Rabbi Steven Jacobs officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider directing.
Anita was preceded in death by Her Parents, Irving and Bess Pemstein, and Her Husband, Fred Berkowitz.
Survivors include Her Daughter, Laura Ann Berkowitz of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Her Son, Ira Mark Berkowitz of Franconia, NH.
Anita Berkowitz nee Pemstein was born in Brooklyn, NY. As a young adult she attended Long Island University and Pharmacy College. This was pioneering for a woman in the 1950s to enter this exclusively male field. She was one of only three women in her class. While in school she met, fell in love and eventually married fellow student Fred Berkowitz. Following his army service they moved to the small town of Geneva in upstate New York, where they owned their own drugstore and raised two children, Laura Ann and Ira Mark. Anita was known for her sense of humor and bright wit. She made friends of whomever she met from neighbors to grocery clerks. But she will be best remembered for her fierce love of her family.
