

Annette Townsend Day, age 86, of Tuscaloosa, died Jan. 13, 2012, at Northport Medical Center- DCH. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Kenneth Dunivant officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Mrs. Day was born in Lakeland, Fla. Aug. 21, 1925. The family moved back to Tuscaloosa in 1931. Annette spent her growing up years in Tuscaloosa, where she graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1942. She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1946 with a major in voice. She had a beautiful contralto voice and was involved in music all her life. She was soloist at several churches before she sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa from 1954 to 2010. She also performed as soloist with the Tuscaloosa Symphony and the Tuscaloosa Civic Chorus. She was a member of the Hugh Thomas Chorus in Birmingham and took part in a recital at Town Hall in New York City in 1951 while with that chorus.
She was a past officer of the Tuscaloosa Music Club and served as the Alabama President of the Women's Auxiliary to the American Dental Association, which worked with dental health in the schools. She was very involved with activities at Pine Valley Retirement Community until her death. She retired from work at Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center in 1986.
She was preceded in death by her only daughter, Georgia Day Couch and her husband, Alan Couch of Birmingham; by her former husband, Dr. Warren E. Day; by her parents, Ernest Adrian Townsend and Frances Hinton Townsend of Tuscaloosa; brothers, John Tunstall of Jacksonville, Fla. and Dr. Morgan Tunstall of Tuscaloosa; and sisters, Frances Tunstall Wehausen of Tuscaloosa and Louise Townsend Edgerley of Lakewood, Calif.
Survivors include her two grandchildren, Matthew Couch and Anna Couch of Birmingham; sister, Majorie Townsend Vetesk and husband Dan Vetesk of Northport; sister-in-law, Virginia Tunstall of Tuscaloosa; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers are the Lee Sunday School Class and choir at First United Methodist Church and friends at Pine Valley Retirement Community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to First United Methodist Church or the choir at First United Methodist Church, 800 Greensboro Ave., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
