Mr. Carl Alexander Tooson, the fourth of seven children of the late Samuel and Earceal Tooson of Cypress, Alabama, was born on February 5, 1936.
Carl finished high school in Hale County Alabama. He went on to college and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Stillman College where he was a member of the baseball team. He started his professional career teaching in Hale County and transitioned to Tuscaloosa County where he taught and eventually became a Principal at Twentieth Street School. He later went on to complete his Master’s degree from the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa while he was working as an Assistant Principal of Tuscaloosa High School. He advanced to the Board of Education where he was the Attendance Supervisor of the school system until he retired in 1989.
Carl was an avid farmer and outdoorsman. He enjoyed it so much that he always maintained his farm including cattle and growing produce in a large garden. He didn’t just maintain this farm in the summer months, but it was maintained year round where he visited it every day after work to maintain the garden and feed his cattle. He could always be consulted for anything related to agriculture such as fertilizer, weed control, PH limits, and you name it. He was known for raising the best sweet potatoes and collard greens where he distributed to many people in the area. He gardened until he could not physically do it anymore up until his 80’s and he loved it.
Carl raised four children including three boys and one girl. He always stressed the importance of education and taking care of your family. He taught all his boys how to fish and hunt, and raised them to be “Men”. He was a Protector when it came to his wife or daughter, and taught his boys to do the same. Many people remember him riding around town with a shotgun in the front seat just in case a squirrel/rabbit ran across the dirt road in the country or in case he had to make a house call in a tough section of town as Attendance Supervisor. Unlike today, that was acceptable. Boys at school told his sons that “Mr. Tooson don’t play.”
Carl enjoyed spending most of his time with his family enjoying the cooked vegetables that came out of his garden and fried fish or game meat that he or his boys killed from a successful hunt. He was an avid Alabama football fan and loved critiquing the players and coaches. He celebrated more than anyone when Alabama won and he hurt more than anyone when they lost.
The family asks that you join them in peace during our loss. Continue to remember and cherish the many fond memories that the husband and father, Carl Alexander Tooson, created with everyone he knew.
Blessings,
The Tooson Family
