Mr. Shubert was preceded in death by his brothers, Hollis Maxwell Shubert and William Snider.
He is survived by his son, Greg C. Shubert and daughter-in-law, Donna Sue Shubert; sister, Bobby Nell Drummond; grandsons, Justin Tyler Shubert and Jason Gregory Shubert; great-grandson, Houston McCoy Shubert; and several nieces and nephews.
Charlie served his country with distinction as a Korean War veteran from June 17, 1953, to May 5, 1955. During that time, he was captured as a POW, and his sacrifice and courage were recognized with the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor. In the quiet constancy of daily life, he also made a simple, steadfast statement of devotion and gratitude—he flew the American flag every day.
He found deep satisfaction in the outdoors and the honest pleasures of time well spent. Charlie was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and he took equal pride in tending an abundant vegetable garden. Music also had a place in his life, and he enjoyed playing the guitar.
More than anything, Charlie will be remembered for the way he showed up for others—eager to volunteer, ready to help anyone in need, and generous with his time and care. He leaves behind too many close friends to mention; as his loved ones say, “you know who you are.” Among the places that meant the most to him was West Greene's Two Rivers subdivision on the Tennessee-Tombigbee river, a favorite setting for the peace and belonging he so valued.
Charlie will be deeply missed and respectfully remembered.
Honorary pallbearers are the Dodson Family, Dr. Fulgham, and the staff of the Tuscaloosa VA Hospital.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
