Cheryl Cook Newman 70, of Seymour, TN (formally of Tuscaloosa, AL) was called to her heavenly home on June 8, 2026 after courageously battling several lengthy health issues. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 24 at Memory Chapel, 2200 Skyland Blvd E in Tuscaloosa beginning at 2:00pm for visitation. The service will follow at 3:00pm with John Belcher presiding over the service.
She is preceded in death by her parents Luther and Geneva Cook and older brother Michael Cook. Survivors include her husband Richard Newman of Seymour, TN; Daughter Carla Beck of Waverly Hall, GA; Stepson Tyler Newman (Amanda) of Foley, AL and Grandson Deyton Dykes of Knoxville, TN. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, most living in Tuscaloosa, Green and Perry counties.
Cheryl was born on September 8, 1955, in Greenville, AL. Her early childhood was spent in Demopolis and Moundville, before moving to Tuscaloosa. She attended city schools and was a proud Tuscaloosa High School Black Bear (Class of ’73). She later received her Nursing degree from Shelton State fulfilling a lifelong dream in 1989.
She loved spending time with friends, traveling, going to the beach, attending New Orleans Jazzfest, Friday Night get togethers with the great crowd at the old Ruby Tuesday, tailgating and Alabama football trips and later traveling with Richard in their camper. Most of all she loved her family and being a good mother was a top priority for her!
On March 6, 2000, her life changed forever when her only grandchild was born. Everything else took a backseat when ‘Her Heart’ was brought into this world. Even when she moved to Tennessee, he would spend holidays and entire summers with his grandparents and she savored every moment loving and spoiling him!
One of her other passions in life was her love of animals. Wild or domestic, she went out of her way to help or save an animal in need. She took numerous squirrels, birds, rabbits, etc. to the vet or shelter seeking help. Her own domestic pets were loved and pampered to the degree that most of them lived very long, healthy and happy lives. She leaves behind three fur babies Tedi, Mystique and Bobby.
She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, she would greatly appreciate donations to The American Humane Society
