“Dr. Cindy” was well known in Tuscaloosa and throughout West Alabama as a highly respected physician specializing in Family Practice and Obstetrics. She was the President of Tuscaloosa Family Practice and Obstetrics, P.C. (previously Dedmon and Clark, which Dr. Dedmon started in 1995 along with her former partner Dr. Jimmie Clark). She was adored and truly revered by everyone who knew her – family, friends, and especially her patients. Despite the high demand and long waiting lists for her medical services, Cindy was always modest and considered what everyone else knew to be “extraordinary” about her, to be ordinary – just doing her job – a job which was truly her calling and which she did with an unparalleled passion, humility, and grace.
Cindy served her country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis College of Medicine in 1985. She completed her internship, residency, and fellowship with the University of Alabama College of Medicine. She served as an assistant professor in the OB/GYN Department from 1990 to 1995, before opening her own practice, Cindy L. Dedmon, MD, PC. She chaired the Family Medicine Department of DCH Regional Medical Center from 2000 to 2002. Since 2002, she has served on the State of Alabama Perinatal Advisory Committee.
Survivors include her children, Sarah Beth Dedmon Turner (Scott) and Joshua Turner Dedmon, both of Tuscaloosa; her parents, Harvey Leon and Shirley Ann Turner of Huntingdon, Tennessee; her siblings, Steven Turner (Rae) of Shelbyville, Ky. and Matt Turner (Paula) of Suwanee, Ga.; nephews, Samuel, Ethan, and Braden Turner; nieces, Katelin Anne and Madison Blaire Turner; her godchildren, Ava and Justin Travis of Tuscaloosa; and Mark Dedmon (father of her children) of Tuscaloosa.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa with Vial Fontenot officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. Dr. Dedmon will be interred Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, in Huntingdon, Tennessee, where she grew up and where her parents still reside.
