Danny was a graduate of Berry High School in Fayette County where he was a school leader and excelled in all sports. His athletic skills enabled him to attend college on athletic scholarships. He began his studies at Gadsden State Community College and played on the college’s first basketball team. From there he transferred to the University of North Alabama, formally Florence State, and earned his BS Degree in History and in Recreation. At UNA he played on the baseball team. At one point Danny suspended his education and was Principal of Bankston School in Fayette County. Working on an emergency teaching certificate, he was principal, PE teacher, lunchroom manager, janitor, and bus driver. He returned to UNA to complete his degree. He later attended the University of Alabama to obtain his teaching certificate and eventually the University of Montevallo to pursue a degree in School Administration.
In 1972 Danny began his career in public education at Bibb County High School. He was Varsity Basketball Coach as well as assistant football and baseball coach. His teaching duties included teaching Alabama History, PE, and Health. He later left the classroom to the position of Superintendent of Maintenance and Transportation. Upon his retirement he worked as a consultant for Tuscaloosa Transit.
Danny loved fishing, SEC football, and sitting on the porch telling tales to anyone who would listen. His biggest joy was his grandchildren who called him “Bop”, his extended family and their friends and families who called him “Uncle Danny” and the many students who sat in his classroom who called him “Coach”.
